ABOUT

2020 is a critical year for climate action. As we approach the US elections and the consequences of climate change are becoming ever more clear and dire with each passing day, a new powerful wave of the climate movement has been swelling. Young people around the world have been rising up to defend our future, and have been going on strike — every week, all over the planet — for months. On September 20, 2019, and again on November 29 and December 6, the adults joined us.

We meant it when we said we are prepared to take the movement to the next level. We recently announced our plans for three days of striking, launching on the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, April 22, and ending on April 24.

On Wednesday, April 22, we launch one of the most powerful civic actions for environmental protection in history. It will provide an opportunity to listen to Indigenous people’s wisdom and reflect on our connections to this earth.

On Thursday, April 23, we focus on community action, with voter registration drives and events occurring across the country. Youth on college campuses will also be demanding their schools divest from fossil fuels, while adults will target financial institutions to do the same.

On Friday, April 24, we strike again, for another day of collective power and unity, with millions of youth leaving school and work to take to the streets across thousands of events across the world.

Led by a diverse coalition of youth-led and adult-led organizations, the strike coalition is shuttling us into a new era of climate action across the world. We are training, expanding, and strengthening in preparation to carry this momentum through 2020, and beyond, to ensure real, bold action is taken to address the climate crisis.

We are prepared to do whatever is necessary to protect our futures. We will stop going to school. We will stop going to work. We refuse to participate in a society and economy that is actively destroying our generation’s chance at a livable future.

On September 20th, over 650,000 people took to the streets across over 1,300 youth-led strikes, rallies, marches, and events for what was the largest youth-led climate mobilization in US history. Earth Day will launch three days of massive nationwide climate actions, fulfilling the promise we made on September 20 to take the climate movement to the next level.
